Breast Cancer Awareness: My Mammogram Vlog

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

I had my first mammogram on September 10th. Everything I'd heard about them made me nervous.
Oy! The squishing, smooshing, squeezing and flattening! Yes, those things do happen, but like
Tootsie, after it was over I left thinking, "eh, that was no big deal."

I've given birth, had an episiotomy, cracked and bleeding nipples and stubbed my pinkie toe countless times. For those of you who haven't had your first mammogram, please don't stress about it. It was over in a flash and only mildly uncomfortable. It was kind of fascinating actually.

Anyway, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month I thought I'd play with my new toy and share with you the details of my second mammogram. Sorry it ends so abruptly. Apparently I talk too much. Image from here.

  1. Mel - Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. It is so much more personal to hear it from you directly rather than to read it. (Plus it's nice to actually see and hear you for the first time!) I'm so glad that your situation turned out well in the end. I hope that many of your readers will take this to heart and keep their own health in the forefront of their minds.

  2. You sound EXACTLY like I thought you would. Awesome. You have a lovely voice, by the way.

I'm with you on the whole "talk to me while you're doing stuff to me" with medical professionals. I tend to get nervous and chatter away when they don't talk. Then I weep because they're not telling me anything, so it must be bad, bad, bad news.

And I ask questions through every procedure. "What are you doing? Why are you doing that? Is everything okay?", but again - that's my way of handling my nerves. I TOTALLY understand how you'd feel scared and intimidated and like it wasn't okay to "interrupt" them.

Lastly, thank God you're okay. And girlfriend, the next time you are dealing with some scary stuff like that, TALK ABOUT IT. Don't do it alone! I'd have been there to hold your hand the whole time, you know? I know, I know - you have a real life support system. I'll stop now. But srsly, I'm glad you're okay. More than glad. :)

  11. I'm SO glad that everything turned out okay. I had a close friend die at 32 years old from breast cancer. I don't wish that pain on anyone!
