I think I may have to get Drama Kid his own iPod with age appropriate music. The radio is causing discussions I'm not ready to have:

Drama Kid: "What does she mean she's 'bleeding love?' Is she really bleeding?"

Me: "No, honey, she's not really bleeding. She's just so in love it's flowing out of her like blood would if she were actually bleeding." [I need to learn to think on my feet better! Thanks,
Leona!]

Drama Kid: "I like this song! My favorite part is where the guys says, [imitating Maroon 5's Adam] 'and then I had to shoot him down.' I like that part." [Thank goodness he doesn't know the actual lyrics!]

Drama Kid: "Mommy? Is this a boy or a girl singing?"

Me: [Crap! Tell me he's not going to ask what I think he's going to ask!] "It's a girl."

DK: "Why would a girl want to kiss another girl?"

Me: [Double crap! He's only 5!!!] "I kiss Grammy and Nana and Auntie J. That's OK, right"

DK: "Oh, OK." [Thank the lord he doesn't know about You Tube! Is it me or is Katy Perry Zooey Deschanel's long lost twin?]

Somehow, I don't think he'd be happy if I break out the Disney Sing Along CD's. Grrr! (All images from Google Images)

  1. I think DK knows more lyrics than I do.

  2. Something that people slam me over all the time? I've always listened to what I want to listen to, even with kids in the car. Not so bad, right? Until you learn that Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jay-Z, etc are all in my regular rotation.

My solution with my kids? A discussion of entertainment v. reality, appropriate language for kids v. adults, etc. Oddly enough, Matt is probably one of the only kids his age who doesn't swear behind our backs. (I know this from neighbors, friends, etc with kids his age.)

And that? Was no help at all, was it?

  3. Jamie- You're probably right!

Steph- It's not too bad yet. But I definitely don't think I need to get into same sex couples quite so soon. LOL!

  4. This is a problem across almost all genres of music, news, and public radio for me. My kids have always been really good at picking out the things I don't want to talk about!

  5. We don't listen to kiddie music. Never have. Our kiddie music was The Beatles.
I listen to whatever strikes my mood, Top 20, R&B, hip hop, rap, glam rock, classic rock, big band, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. I want my kids to grow up to appreciate a variety of music.
But now that my kids pick up on everything I have to be a little more careful. So when "I Kissed a Girl" comes on I just change the channel. It's a catchy song, but I'm with you, I'm not ready to have a discussion about why a girl is kissing a girl with a 3 & 5 year old.

  6. Lyrics can be seriously instructional--in both good ways and bad!

  7. I was just gonna say the same thing about Katy Perry. Maybe they were seperated at birth or something.

Funny story...my daughter, the 18 year old, walks around singing Bleeding Love, ALL.THE.TIME. My two year old walked up to her yesterday and handed her a band-aide.

Thanks for stopping by my place! I'm really enjoying your blog. Must remember to add you to my roll/reader!

  8. I posted a very similar blog a few months ago. We had issues with the Leona song as well as the No Air song. It definitely made for interesting discussion about metaphors and how they are used in song lyrics.

  9. It's never too soon to get into same sex couples. Ruby's aunties---who are her next-of-kin should anything happen to us---are gay. She also has a friend Kenny, who has two mommies. This is part of her life so we talk about it honestly and openly. So, I would respectfully disagree with putting off that conversation. :)

  10. Gina- Where do kids get that "this will make Mommy uncomfortable" radar? ;^)

HS- Yep, you're right. I think I'll just change the station.

    Jenn- Too true!

Auds- Cute story! And thank you, I'm flattered!

Jen- Kids definitely force us to explain things in "their" language!

TF- Oh, we'll definitely be having the conversation, but not in the context of that song, which to me, is more about titillation than relationships.
